Dentrell Tate

Dear HBCU Students,

My name is Dentrell Tate. I am a Clarksdale, MS, native who attended Clarksdale High School. After high school, I transitioned to the University of Mississippi as a business school student and majored in Risk Management and Insurance. The RMI program has opened many doors for me and allowed me to have a promising future thus far. I now work for Willis Tower Watson as a Risk Analyst with the Southeast’s Large & Complex Casualty team.

As a Risk Analyst at WTW, I handle data analytics for our clients with the help of our Casualty Analytics tools provided within our practice. Within the Large & Complex Casualty practice, we mainly handle Workers’ Comp, Auto Liability, General Liability, Excess & Umbrella regarding Large & Complex accounts for major corporations. Maintaining and developing relationships with carriers, underwriters, and clients is a part of my job. I find it very important because the client must trust you, and building that trust is essential to the job.

The insurance industry is a very promising career path. There are many opportunities for growth and many opportunities to continue your education within the industry. The learning never stops. What I enjoy most about my job is client-facing interaction. The insurance industry gives you the experience where you can build relationships in the industry while helping others at the same time. The industry will also challenge you and allow you to show your best skill set while also building and learning in the industry. Overall, it’s great because there is no limit to what you can learn and accomplish in the Risk Management and Insurance industry.

The Certificate Program is an excellent opportunity for all HBCU students considering a business, risk management, and insurance career. This will be a way to build excellence in the industry for the Black community, which is not a large share of the industry. I believe diversity is growing, and this opportunity to learn, network, and earn the certificate will put HBCU students in a place to accomplish greatness within the industry and begin building a future and generational wealth.

This opportunity will be a great way to start something good for yourself and shine a light on the great opportunities for Black professionals in the insurance industry.

Dria Jones

Dear HBCU Students,

My name is Dria Jones. I was born & raised in Vicksburg, MS. I attended high school at Vicksburg High & chose to participate at the University of Mississippi after graduation. I originally started my college career as a Computer Science major. However, during my junior year, I switched to the business school as a Management of Information Systems major. My first elective class in business school was a course that introduced me to insurance & I absolutely loved it. I then chose to join the RMI program soon after taking that class. The RMI program was one of the best things that have ever happened to me. This program prepared me very well & allowed me to have a promising career over the years in this industry. I am a Senior Loss Prevention Specialist for Summit Consulting & I’m based out of Metro Atlanta.

As a Senior Loss Prevention Specialist, I complete loss prevention surveys/physical inspections of commercial accounts. This provides underwriters with an accurate description of the operational details of our customers. I identify hazards & potential loss exposures, make recommendations, & consult with underwriters regarding account acceptability, exposures, and controls. I also conduct accident investigations & loss analysis to identify the cause of accidents. In this position, I develop relationships with agents, underwriters, & customers.

This industry can offer anyone a bright career through various career paths. There are numerous opportunities for growth, advancement, & for continuing education. Within this industry, you can find a place that will enable you to sharpen your skills, expand your knowledge, & grow as a person. My current position is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I really enjoy meeting with new people, helping customers improve their safety culture, and traveling all over Georgia. That would not be possible without the help & support of the RMI Program at Ole Miss.

The Certificate Program is an excellent opportunity for HBCU students considering a finance, business, risk management, or insurance career. This will be a fantastic opportunity for students from HBCUs to shine in an industry looking for bright young stars like yourself. I would recommend to anyone to take a chance & learn what this industry offers.
